In April 1959, he was named Fuzuli in honor of the 400th anniversary of the birth of the poet Muhammad Fuzuli.
In the summer of 1968, archaeologist Mammadali Huseynov found the bones of the lower jaw of a man before Neanderthal-Azykhantrop in the Azykh cave, 15 km from the district center.
The city, which has been under occupation since 1993, was liberated on October 17, 2020, by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.
