History of Sheki

There are ancient settlements in Sheki, which are considered to be more than 2,700 years old. It’s presumed that the name of Sheki comes from Saks, who lived in Azerbaijan in the 7th century BC.

Sheki khanate was marked in history as one of the strongest khanates in the 18th century. Sheki was the capital of Sheki khanate. The principal activity of the local people was sericulture, handicrafts, and trade. 

Monuments, preserved in Sheki, are historical and architectural monuments that date to the 16-19th centuries. After a devastating flood, Sheki was moved from its original place to the present location, which happened during the existence of Sheki khanate. Originally the city was called by the name "Nukha", then the name was changed to Sheki.

The Albanian church in the village of Kish, Sheki Khan's Palace, Yukhari and Ashagi Caravanserais of Sheki, Gilahli Mosque or Gileyli Mosque, Galarsan-Gorarasan fortress are the main historical monuments of Sheki.
