Cultural life of Shamakhi

The carpet weaving factory in Shamakhi, which has been known as one of the centres of carpet weaving in Azerbaijan since ancient times, still exists.


The favorable climate provides a good condition for viniculture, the winemaking industry in the territory of Shamakhi.

Today Shamakhi is a well-known wine and carpet center. Shamakhi is one of the largest cultural centers in Azerbaijan, which was the birthplace of many Azerbaijani poets- Khagani, Nasimi, Seid Azim Shirvani, Abbas Sahhat, and many other great thinkers, scholars, and inspirers. 

Seyid Yahya Bakuvi, architect Ziver bey Ahmedbeyov, geographer Haji Zeynalabdin Shirvani, historian Haji Mohammedali Shirvani, poet Mirza Alakbar Sabir, Azerbaijani poet, and educator Seyid Azim Shirvani, khurufi poet Imadeddin Nasimi, world-famous khananda Alim Gasimov.                                                                                 

 M.A.Sabir's House Museum

Azerbaijani poet, satirist Mirza Alekper Sabir was born in 1862 in Shamakhi. One of the authors of the satirical magazine "Molla Nasreddin". The Sabir House Museum in Shamakhi was established in 1998  and has seven exhibition halls. There are about 600 exhibits are saved from his life period. Entry is free.
