Cultural life of Gakh

Gakh has developed a wide variety of crafts for centuries, and the popularity of artists has spread throughout Azerbaijan, as well as in Georgia and Dagestan.

Ilisu's sheep was great raw material for carpet weaving. A change from carpet weaving to sheep breeding took place, thus famous carpet masters and their descendants began to be forgotten. The carpets like Khali-khalcha, gebe, jejim, palaz, kilim, khayma with colors from natural herbs, woven from the wool of the sheep, were the decoration of Ilisu homes. The carpets woven in Ilisu differ according to their specific technology. They are long and thin. The carpet designs are based on ancient Turkish motifs. It is still possible to find carpets weaving in private homes of Ilisu.

In the regions of Azerbaijan, Karabakh, Shirvan, and Sheki, artisans have built innumerable homes. In other fields of art, İlisu people have also gained popularity. Many Ilisulu banners have built dozens of large architectural monuments such as the Balakan and Tala mosques.
